The latest issue right now is the squabble between GSIS and the Lopezes over Meralco. Its noisy, nakaka-turn-off. The former accuses the latter of gaining profits through hig cost of electricity given to the consumers. Yes, the power rates are one of the most expensive in Asia, thus uncompetitive. Is it really a squable for the greater majority or is it a squable for political vendetta of the president versus the Lopezes? Speculations are quite high recently. In the end, the people would be the one who is suffering.
Manila complains that they have the most expensive electricity rate in the country, about P8.00 to P9.00 KwH while PECO charges about approximately P11.50 per KwH. Its damn expensive! And Manila is complaining it is expensive! PECO explains that majority of their energy comes from the diesel power plant of PPC. Diesel is expensive nowadays. I wonder why our leaders back then weren’t that forward thinking and instead will only respond only when it needs to?
But anyway, I hope that the Iloilo scenario of having high cost of electricty yet unreliability should go national. It should be brought into national attention. What is Congressman Raul Gonzales Jr doing? He promised his constituents of an investigation.
While the proposed construction of a clean coal power plant in Iloilo City is still left hanging for its ECC approval, the expensive power rates and unreliable service of electricity (due to energy shortage presently affecting most of Western Visayas) has been keeping the investors away from investing in Iloilo. Iloilo City is very compeitive, its just that electricity hinders its economic take-off once more.
After all, if Gloria is indeed serious about bringing down the power rates, then she should be holisitc. After all MERALCO is not the Philippines alone, same analogy as Manila is not Philippines alone.
